Must Dos In Mykonos – 2014 Edition

What do you imagine Mykonos to be? For most it is beach party capital or even gay mecca, where you can be showered by €200 vintage champagne (this happened to us at Nammos Beach Club at Psarou….apparently this is where you GO to be SEEN. Money doesn’t buy class) and galavant into the sunset on hedonistic adventures until 8am the next morning.

But Mykonos has many masks and something for everyone.I was so over alcohol, partying and late nights from Pamps that my days in Mykonos were spent swimming, sleeping and eating with a lil exploring on the side.

Mykonos is very spread out….and hilly. While there are busses I would definitely recommend organising your own means of transport, car, scooter or ATV, for getting around to the beaches and beachclubs during the afternoon. Along with Santorini, Mykonos is one of the most expensive Greek Islands so prepare to pay top dollar for accommodation, hire rates and eating out. During may-june and september-october rates are often halved and you beat the crowds….not a bad alternative?

A usual day in Mykonos usually involves waking up around midday, having breakfast around 2-3pm, hitting up a beach club for the afternoon for cocktails and swimming. After sunset is siesta time. Normal dinner seating can be anywhere between 10pm-1am, with nightclubs opening from 1-2am onwards. Partying until 7am and then sleeping it off for a few hours before waking up and doing it all over again!

Here is what you cannot miss…..

DO walk through the village, through Little Venice and up to get a shot with the Windmills. *Prepare yourself for super touristyness in every nook and cranny

DO have a Cappucino Freddo……….mmmmmm. Have it at a funky cafe in town and people watch. It’ll cost you €5 but it’s worth it.

DO go to Paradise Beach and check out the infamous Paradise Beach club and Tropicana. There are Brazillian Zumba dancers, girls dancing on tables as well as an MC guy with a pe*nis elephant undie thing directing everyone to see a guy called Dimitris if there is “annnythinng you need at all”. The beach here is packed to the brim the entire length and width with beach umbrellas and chairs. It’s not age specific but you will see mostly young european teens all of whom are not wearing much at all. They are most busy from after lunch time till sunset.  DO NOT go here to chill

DO find Fokos Taverna and Beach.   Has not everyone seen Wog Boys 2 – King of Mykonos?? I LOVE this movie, but everyone was oblivious to the fact that we had found the taverna and beach in the movie and the big tree the car is parked under (if you’ve seen it you’ll knowthat reads 'Fokos Taverna' exactly what i’m talking about). This Taverna is one of the islands best kept secrets (sort of), you will only know to go there if someone tells you about it as there is pretty much NO signage on how to get there. The Taverna opens at 1pm on the dot, you cannot order before but you need to get there early or be prepared to wait for a table. It is traditional greek style without the cliché dishes (eg. moussaka) – all fresh, all organic, specialising in seafood. Ask the waiter what they recommend and they will bring you a flavoursome selection of dishes and mezze plates for your table. Everything is delicious here.  And the view…….a beautiful, crystal clear cove edged by towering cliffs. This was our FAVOURITE beach on Mykonos, and one of in the Greek Islands. Just go there, ask a local for directions.

IMG_2643DO go to Jackie O Beach Club (at Super Paradise Beach) for a cocktail.                                This beach is a classier version of Paradise attracting a slightly older, richer and more sophisticated crowd. Jackie Os is all sleek white curves, speedos and waiters with diamante encrusted  singlets. The stunning pool deck sits atop the cliff above super paradise beach which lays the backdrop to their fabulous daily drag queen show!

DO find O’bati Restaurant! Mouth watering Italian and impeccable service. We planned our exit out of Greece to go via Mykonos and stay in walking distance of THIS restaurant. The Zuchinni Balls melt in your mouth. And just look at the pic of the seafood marinara……no more words needed. Other than, incredible value and unbeatable quality and setting. Pastas range from €9-€17e. It is in the area of ‘Glastros’ not far from the centre of town. It is worth looking it up, you can drive or take any bus going towards Platis Gialos.

— Mykonos Accommodation —

1. Elia Beach…..quiet and out of town. We were lucky to score a 2 bedroom beachfront villa. Beautiful decoraed in classic white greek island style inside. My favourite feature was the black tiled shower. Huge terrace with sun loungers and table and chairs right on the beach, opposite their open air restaurant. Need a car if you are going to stay here an still want to do some exploring of Mykonos

2. Hotel Charissi…..close to town but not IN town. Ten minute walk or a short bus ride. Marble floored and we had a huge terrace. Super clean throughout the entire property and very friendly and accommodating owners who looked after us. We were only there for one night, but would definitely stay again when returning to Mykonos as it was nice to be away from the craziness of the centre of town. And best of all, walking distance to our favourite – O’Bati
